demons that we're gonna talk about today, will

0:05

rise up against the Lord at the end of time,

0:09

but the king of glory will

0:12

destroy them with the might of his coming.

0:16

You have your Bibles, turn with me to Ephesians,

0:20

chapter 6, and

0:23

verse number 14, and as

0:27

I said earlier, we're going to get back to our exposition

0:31

of Ephesians, and really

0:34

begin into the actual study of the armor today,

0:39

the verses leading up, we're preparing us, but

0:42

now we're really getting into the armor.

0:44

Let's begin by reading verse 14.

0:46

Stand

0:49

firm, therefore.

0:51

Having girded

0:54

your loins with truth, and

0:58

having put on the breastplate of

1:02

righteousness.

1:03

Now, the

1:07

depth of what we are dealing with here

1:11

is really far beyond my ability

1:15

to communicate properly to you.

1:18

But hopefully, we're gonna scratch the surface

1:21

enough to receive some

1:24

benefit and some growth for ourselves

1:28

out of this tremendous text.

1:31

We're talking about things here from

1:34

the spiritual realm that we can't even see with

1:38

our physical eyes.

1:40

And this is the final section, as

1:43

I've said before, of the Book of Ephesians,

1:46

and in our last two messages, we learned that all

1:49

believers are engaged in warfare.

1:54

A great continual

1:58

battle until Jesus

2:02

returns, or we go to glory ourselves.

2:05

And we also learned in this text, so 4,

2:08

that all believers are

2:12

engaged in this battle against

2:15

a very formidable enemy,

2:18

Satan, and all of his host,

2:21

of fallen angels.

2:23

And I need you to understand that

2:28

as a Christian, as you strive

2:31

to live for God's glory, you

2:35

will not be able to escape this war.

2:38

And in fact, the

2:43

more diligently, you

2:46

live for God's glory, the

2:50

more intense, the enemy will make

2:53

the warfare be for you.

2:55

So you can't escape these battles.

2:59

as a believer.

3:01

It's only a question as

3:04

to how it manifests itself.

3:07

And what specifics may

3:10

occur in your own personal part of

3:14

this warfare.

3:16

As I said last time, you are either in the tent?

3:18

Or you're out on the battlefield,

3:22

swinging your sword as a Christian.

3:25

Either way, the

3:28

collision is inevitable,

3:32

and it's very constant, it's very continual.

3:37

If you're in the

3:40

tent, you're getting beat

3:43

down by the enemy on the regular and you probably don't even know it.

3:46

If you're out on the battlefield,

3:50

you know, for sure, the intensity of the

3:53

fight, and you know, by personal experience,

3:57

how hard the adversary fights,

4:00

and how powerful and effective he is at

4:04

waging war, with all believers.

4:07

But we've also been learning,

4:10

since the very start of Ephesians chapter 1, all of

4:13

the tremendous resources that we possess in

4:17

in order to fight this war in addition to

4:21

the armor that we're going to start into to talk about today.

4:25

We've all received all spiritual blessings in

4:28

the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.

4:30

Remember from Ephesians chapter 1.

4:32

We've been granted forgiveness of all of our sins.

4:35

We've been adopted by grace into the family of God.

4:39

Think about what we've been given.

4:40

We've been given peace, the peace, that surpasses all understanding.

4:44

We've been given knowledge.

4:46

We've been made a part of this incredible mystery

4:49

that was planned from before the foundation

4:53

of the world.

4:54

Well, we've been given the Holy Spirit to indwell

4:57

us, and who has sealed us until

5:00

the day of redemption.

5:01

We've been made ambassadors of

5:05

the king of kings, of the universe.

5:08

We've been made soldiers in the Lord's army.

5:12

We are the people of God.

5:15

And we have been put in this

5:18

world to accomplish the

5:22

goals, and the plans, and the purposes

5:25

which Creator God himself has

5:28

designed for the advancement

5:31

of his kingdom, throughout church history, all

5:35

the way up to the Second Coming.

5:37

Let me ask you.

5:40

What greater purpose

5:44

in meaning in your life

5:47

could you possibly have than that?

5:50

We have the greatest sense of

5:53

purpose and meaning for why we're here, then anyone on

5:57

the Earth as the people of God?

5:58

And with all of that, we

6:03

are withstood, or sure, by

6:08

a very bitter enemy, who

6:12

hates our guts.

6:14

The very enemy, think of it.

6:18

who withstood God himself,

6:22

in his own heavens, and said, I will be like the Most High.

6:26

Can you imagine?

6:28

The very enemy who withstood

6:31

man in his innocence in the Garden of Eden, and

6:34

helped plunged the entire human race into a

6:37

state of sin and misery?

6:39

The very enemy who has tried multiple

6:43

times to wipe out the nation of

6:46

Israel, the very enemy.

6:48

Think of it, who tried to stop

6:51

the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ in

6:55

the slaughter of the innocents.

6:56

You remember the story?

6:58

He wanted to wipe out all

7:01

of Jesus' ministry, life, death,

7:04

bare resurrection and second coming when he worked

7:07

through King Herod to murder all those little babies.

7:11

That enemy.

7:12

The very enemy who is always at work.

7:16

trying to deceive and

7:20

rip the church apart at every chance he gets.

7:23

The very enemy who is always at

7:27

work, trying to hinder our service to

7:30

the king, while we're here on the earth.

7:33

The very enemy, who I said earlier, will one day,

7:36

literally, go directly at God, in

7:39

war, and battle at the very end of time, and

7:44

any Christian, who doesn't understand these things.

7:48

Any Christian, who

7:52

doesn't understand the significance of these things,

7:56

is a Christian who is going to be victimized.

7:59

by the enemy.

8:01

He will keep you in the

8:04

tent, as I said.

8:06

And you are then what?

8:10

You are then one less soldier out on the

8:13

battlefield when you're in the tent.

8:14

This causes you

8:17

to forfeit rewards in heaven.

8:19

Strip you.

8:22

of your ability to bring

8:25

glory to God with your life.

8:27

And if you are genuinely a regenerate

8:30

Christian, you should want more

8:33

than anything to bring glory to God with your life.

8:37

That should be an automatic new desire for you when you come

8:40

to faith in Jesus Christ.

8:41

You want to live in such a way as to bring him glory, not

8:44

in the perfection of your life, but in the direction of your life.

8:48

Now, we

8:52

have to be aware of this war.

8:53

And we have to be ready for battle.

8:56

Every day.

8:58

And unless you're in some

9:01

kind of hurry to finish Ephesians.

9:02

Which I guess it doesn't really.

9:05

matter if you are or not.

9:06

Before we get any further

9:09

in this text, this is what I want

9:12

to do, I want to give you a little further explanation.

9:14

And added to last time, actually, of

9:18

the how and the why Satan attacked

9:22

believers.

9:23

Number one, he attacks a

9:26

believer, to undermine God's

9:30

character and God's credibility.

9:32

He wants to undermine God.

9:36

He wants

9:40

you to doubt God.

9:41

He did it in the garden with

9:45

Eve, you remember?

9:46

Has God really said?

9:50

He was impugning

9:53

God's motive at that moment.

9:55

He was saying, well, the real reason God doesn't want you to eat that,

9:59

is because God knows then you'll be like him,

10:02

and God can't stand competition, right?

10:04

So God really has selfish,

10:08

ulterior motives, and you really can't trust him.

10:11

You really can't believe God.

10:14

I mean, he may say one thing, but deep down inside,

10:17

he means something else.

10:18

So his word is not really totally believable.

10:23

The New

10:26

Testament makes clear, if you deny God his word, you make him a liar.

10:29

And that's what Satan wants to do.

10:33

He wants people to think that

10:36

God is the liar and that he is the one who's telling the truth.

10:40

You can't trust God.

10:43

You can doubt

10:47

God, and you should.

10:49

You can doubt God and his word and

10:52

his power, and guess what?

10:53

We all fall for this trap at times.

10:56

Very subtly.

10:57

We get tempted.

10:59

In a difficult situation, and what do we do?

11:03

We worry.

11:04

We fret, we get anxious, we get angry, we

11:07

lose our self control, and in those moments,

11:10

We are walking in our flesh,

11:13

and we stop believing in those

11:17

moments that God can actually get us out of the situation.

11:19

We're overcome with worry and fret

11:22

and doubt.

11:23

We doubt God's grace sometimes.

11:26

We doubt God's mercy sometimes.

11:29

It's nothing but a denial.

11:33

Of his promises to us, and thereby his word.

11:37

There are times when we also, we

11:40

also even doubt the love of God.

11:42

We think, How in the world could

11:46

God possibly love me

11:49

when he let this happen to me?

11:51

And

11:54

the enemy works really hard.

11:57

to push us to the place where we actually

12:00

doubt the love of God.

12:03

One time he attacked Peter, and

12:09

he caused Peter to doubt the

12:12

truth of God.

12:13

You remember what Jesus said to him?

12:15

Peter, be careful.

12:16

Satan

12:19

desires.

12:21

to sift you like wheat.

12:23

What a description from the Lord Jesus.

12:26

So Satan attacks us to undermine

12:29

God's character and God's credibility, and here's a pro tip.

12:33

As soon as you start to

12:37

doubt God.

12:38

at any point in

12:41

terms of his perfect character that

12:45

you know he has, and his perfect

12:48

credibility that you know he has, that

12:51

is perfect, consider the source.

12:53

That's all you have to do.

12:56

You know he's perfect in his character.

12:59

You know he's perfect in his credibility.

13:01

Consider the source of where that thought came from.

13:05

Number two, Satan attacks

13:08

us to make it hard to live the Christian life, as I said.

13:11

He knows that in the end, he can't have us.

13:15

He knows this perfectly.

13:17

So he wants to make things as

13:20

difficult as possible for us while we're here.

13:24

And he does this in a number of ways.

13:26

Number one would be persecution.

13:28

That's the most extreme way.

13:30

Just go ask the people in Nigeria right now.

13:32

Just go ask other people in Africa

13:35

and other parts of the Middle East who are being persecuted

13:38

for their faith right now.

13:39

In addition to that, he makes it hard to live the Christian life

13:43

in much lesser ways of what, that's

13:46

a shame to even call persecution, but think of

13:49

little subtle ways, being made fun of.

13:51

The pressure of not wanting

13:55

to move on from that certain circle of

13:58

old friends who are not believers,

14:01

not wanting to be thought of, as different,

14:04

not wanting to be thought of, by others, as peculiar,

14:08

not wanting to lose out on being well

14:12

liked, by others, being

14:15

thought of, as a religious nut, or a

14:18

religious kook.

14:20

A third way, he makes it hard

14:24

to live, the Christian life is sometimes

14:27

making it too easy to live in.

14:30

That's another subtlety.

14:31

And this is a problem both inside and outside the

14:34

church in a very general way.

14:36

You've heard me say it many times.

14:39

We are way too comfortable here in America.

14:42

Way too comfortable.

14:44

So believers

14:47

start to think, well, why do we need to be so serious?

14:51

But, Philip, why are you so serious about all this?

14:53

Lighten up, dude.

14:55

Or for the unbeliever.

14:57

Why do I need Christ at all?

15:00

I mean, I got a nice house.

15:02

I got a nice car.

15:03

I got a boat.

15:04

I got a great salary.

15:06

I got a very secure retirement.

15:08

Things are going great.

15:10

What do I need Jesus for?

15:11

Right?

15:12

Now, societally

15:16

speaking, it's less easier to be a Christian in

15:20

America than in the past when cultural

15:23

Christianity coming to an end.

15:25

I mean, we did just see a Baptist worship service attacked

15:28

by leftist lunatics in Minnesota.

15:31

I've never seen that happen before in the way that it did,

15:34

but thankfully, arrests have been made.

15:38

Thank you.

15:39

Thank you, DOJ.

15:41

Came a little slow, but it came.

15:42

So, really, when you think

15:45

about it, I mean, we still have it pretty comfortable,

15:48

folks, here, in the USA.

15:51

And that brings about a temptation to

15:54

just coast in the Christian life.

15:58

Stay within the four walls.

16:01

Not feel the need to

16:05

impact the world outside these four walls

16:08

because we're just so comfortable in here.

16:10

Another attack

16:13

that Satan uses against believers is

16:17

that he confuses believers with false doctrine.

16:20

books, social

16:24

media, post, whole

16:28

worldwide ministries, all in

16:31

Jesus' name, can wreak havoc in

16:34

the minds of Christians who are not rooted and

16:38

grounded in sound doctrine.

16:39

And the enemy is very sleek.

16:43

Never forget, there

16:47

are always, always, elements

16:50

of truth mixed in with error

16:53

with professing Christian false teachers,

16:56

always.

16:58

Just like if you take a medicine dropper, and

17:02

squeeze one drop of arsenic into a

17:05

five gallon jug of Kentwood, spring water,

17:09

or 55 gallon drama, Kentwood, spring water,

17:13

The Bible says a little leaven.

17:15

Leavens the whole lump.

17:17

Right?

17:19

This is yet another reason.

17:21

You need to be at church.

17:22

Sitting under the expository

17:25

preaching of sound doctrine rooted

17:28

and grounded in sound theology.

17:31

You need to come to Sunday school.

17:32

Be discipled by sound biblical teaching.

17:36

You need to be exposing yourself to sound sermons

17:40

and sound books at home.

17:41

And we're here.

17:43

We're here to help point you in the right direction of

17:46

those books, and those sermons, and those teachers.

17:48

If you are consistently and

17:51

constantly immersed in

17:54

sound doctrine,

17:55

And you're putting that into your head, into your brain,

17:58

into your bloodstream, on a regular basis.

18:00

When something pops up on social media that's out

18:03

of line, immediately, your discernment antenna

18:07

goes up and says, Revert!

18:09

That ain't lining up with scripture.

18:12

The things that

18:15

people believe today in our

18:18

country, that are actual Christianity,

18:21

they think, and the millions of dollars, that

18:25

people sin to false teachers every year, is

18:28

a sad witness to the effectiveness

18:32

of our enemy, using false doctrine in

18:35

Jesus' name, to literally deceive millions

18:39

of people, every single day in this country, and around

18:42

the world.

18:43

Now,

18:46

fourthly, the enemy tries as hard as he can

18:49

to hinder our service to Christ.

18:53

He wants to stop

18:56

faithful, effective service.

19:00

I'm telling you, he wants to stop me

19:03

from serving here or anywhere else on

19:07

the planet.

19:08

I mean, I want you to think about what happened out at First Livingston.

19:11

Pure evil is

19:15

what happened at First Livingstone.

19:16

You're going to find out a little bit more about that as

19:20

the days go on, but what they meant for evil, what did God do?

19:24

He turned it for good in an amazing way.

19:27

at Salem Baptist.

19:28

Consider what happened, 16 years ago,

19:31

17 years ago, at Cedar Crest Baptist Church.

19:34

What they meant for evil.

19:37

God turned to good,

19:40

with a church that has lasted over

19:44

15 years now.

19:45

rooted and grounded and sound doctrine.

19:49

And yeah, we're small, but think about all the things coming

19:52

out of that evil that this little church has done over the past

19:55

15 plus years.

19:57

Think about the turkeys we fed in our community,

20:00

to people in need.

20:02

Think about the Christmas toys, to underprivileged children.

20:05

Think about the ministries Tracy and Dad have to the

20:08

police that we do.

20:10

Think about how we help support Mary's house of

20:13

bread and the Gideons and Ed Lacy Ministries.

20:16

Think about the men's meeting that has developed here over the

20:19

course of the last year with men from as many seven different churches here coming every month.

20:23

The ladies meeting with different people from different churches coming here.

20:26

Think about all the ways that God has used Providence

20:29

Baptist Church to affect our community.

20:33

Let me tell you.

20:33

It's noticed.

20:35

You may not know this, but the mayor and the

20:38

leaders of our town, they know about us, that we help in the community.

20:42

And that's not just to say, hey, look at us.

20:45

No, we're following scripture.

20:47

We're helping those in need in the name of Jesus.

20:51

But all of these things.

20:55

Do not deter the enemy.

20:59

One bit, from

21:02

continuing to try and take us out.

21:05

He wants to shut us down.

21:08

Especially, these here we stand churches that we are a part of.

21:12

Another ministry that wouldn't have

21:15

probably happened without Providence Baptist Church.

21:17

Think of it.

21:19

He would love to take us down.

21:20

Examples abound with

21:24

preacher friends of mine.

21:25

It's part of the warfare that

21:29

we have to expect that we don't run from,

21:32

that we run two with

21:35

our sword, ready for battle.

21:37

Here's another attack that he's constantly happens on the regular.

21:41

Satan does all that he can to try to stir

21:45

up division inside churches.

21:47

We've all seen it.

21:49

We've all experienced it, right?

21:52

Praise God for his work here at

21:55

keeping us unified in the way that he has.

21:58

That's why Jesus was so clear when he said, If you have anything against your

22:01

brother, go and be reconciled to your brother before you come back and worship.

22:04

So Paul said, in Ephesians chapter

22:08

4 and verse number 3, being diligent to

22:11

preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

22:15

We have to be sure to never, ever take our unity

22:18

that we have here in our church for granted, ever.

22:21

We have to be diligent to keep our unity in check.

22:25

Because the enemy always

22:28

wants to tear it all up.

22:31

And then there are some subtle attacks that come at us,

22:35

really, in a myriad of ways.

22:37

I mean, we could just go on for days here.

22:39

How about get to chunking

22:43

up all the theological knowledge you've learned?

22:45

We've read all the right books.

22:48

We listen to all the best sermons

22:51

from all the best preachers in the world.

22:52

We know all the principles for Christian living.

22:55

We've been taught by the best Bible teachers, and

22:58

so I can handle the problems in my life.

23:00

Because I go to church all the time, and I've got all

23:03

my theological ducks in a row.

23:05

So now I can lean on my own understanding.

23:07

I can depend on my own wisdom and knowledge

23:10

and learning to live the Christian life.

23:12

That's a place the enemy can get us to out of the number one sin of all sins.

23:16

Pride.

23:18

Pride.

23:20

Instead of being like Isaiah.

23:22

Woe is me.

23:25

Woe is me.

23:28

I'm a man of unclean lips.

23:30

That's the right attitude, before God.

23:33

He understood so well that he had no resource apart from God.

23:36

And neither do we.

23:38

Here's another

23:41

subtle way the enemy attacks.

23:44

A believer.

23:45

Show up to church, Sunday

23:49

after Sunday, interact with people.

23:52

Like everything's fine all the time.

23:55

I don't have any problem put on the mask.

23:57

All is well, so good, I just

24:00

never allow brothers and sisters to minister to you.

24:03

and bear your burdens and pray for you, praying for one another's knees.

24:07

Another attack, the relentless attack, to

24:11

appeal to our flesh,

24:14

to make us worldly.

24:16

And this was a big one.

24:17

And this would be tricky.

24:20

I want you to listen.

24:21

Because there can be worldly things that we

24:24

engage in that are not sinful in and of themselves.

24:28

We can participate in these things without

24:32

sinning, but at the same time, we

24:35

can fall into being sinful in

24:39

them in a very worldly way.

24:42

Remember what John says.

24:44

He says, Love

24:47

not the world.

24:49

The issue is, do

24:53

you love the things of the world in

24:56

such a way that they consume you?

24:59

That's what the issue is there.

25:01

For example, Chrissy can tell you.

25:03

I don't really care

25:06

much what's on TV except during football season.

25:09

All right?

25:11

During football season, when I have time to

25:14

watch the games, or on TV.

25:17

I used to have a special room.

25:19

where I watched the games, but

25:23

there's a certain feline who has commandeered that room.

25:26

So I have had to move to other spaces

25:29

in the home in order to watch football.

25:33

But if my

25:37

football watching took priority over

25:40

my necessary work and study and ministry,

25:43

that would be sinful, in a worldly way.

25:46

You understand what I'm saying?

25:48

That's just a dumb, practical example.

25:49

And you can come up with an endless

25:52

list here of these kind of examples, materialism,

25:56

keeping up with the Joneses, on

25:59

and on and on and on and on.

26:00

You can go with this list.

26:01

What I want you to understand is that the enemy never

26:04

stops trying to entice us, to

26:08

draw us away in a sinful way.

26:11

And I'll stop with one more.

26:13

And remember, this is not an exhaustive list.

26:16

I mean, if you want to really see how subtle the

26:19

demons can be, go read C.S. Lewis screw tape letters, and

26:23

he really gets down in the weeds of all the subtleties

26:26

of the ways the enemy can attack us.

26:28

This is just very general.

26:29

The enemy wants us to to act

26:32

in disobedience to

26:36

what we know, without a shadow

26:39

of a doubt, is disobedience to God's word.

26:43

I'm talking about directly.

26:45

Whether it's social, sexual,

26:49

any manner of headings that you can come up with, where we

26:52

know for sure that this right here, what

26:55

I'm doing is direct disobedience to God's Word,

26:58

and the enemy comes in, and he tempts it, go ahead and do it anyway.

27:02

Just go and do it anyway.

27:04

I think of an example here.

27:08

women pastors, okay?

27:10

This is an example that just made me think of this.

27:13

With two eyeballs and

27:16

a brain, and an ability to read,

27:19

you can easily understand that the Bible

27:22

is very clear that the office of pastor is ordained for men only.

27:26

Very easy to understand.

27:29

OK?

27:30

It doesn't have anything to do that men are more intelligent.

27:34

Men are more elevated, anything.

27:37

Remember, we studied this.

27:39

It has to do with the authority structure that God has laid down.

27:43

And yet, many people read that and say...

27:45

I see that, but I don't think that that's

27:49

really what it means for this time.

27:50

It just means it for back then.

27:54

I think women pastors are okay.

27:57

Come on, Lady Jones, or whoever, come up here and be our pastor.

28:01

Let me tell you something.

28:04

That is just direct willful

28:08

disobedience to the word of God for

28:11

a church to have a woman pastor.

28:13

And the results of that kind of thinking have wreaked havoc

28:17

in the church, especially in America, because what has it led

28:20

to in many of the mainline denominations?

28:23

Well, if you can have a woman, pastor, you might as well have a homo pastor.

28:26

You might as well have a sodomite up here being your pastor.

28:29

That's what it's led to.

28:31

And so, again, we

28:34

come back to how do

28:38

we deal with all of this?

28:39

Well, that's a lot of different kind of

28:42

attacks, Brother Philip.

28:43

Well, that's many more.

28:44

And I will remind you of

28:48

what we've already started to look into.

28:49

Here is the

28:52

overarching answer that's going

28:55

to lead us into the details over the next few Sundays of time.

28:59

Look at verse 13 before we get to 14.

29:02

Let's remember what 13 says.

29:03

Here's the overarching answer.

29:04

How do you deal with the attacks of the enemy?

29:07

Therefore, take up the full armor

29:11

of God, so that you will be able to resist in

29:15

the evil day, and having done everything to

29:18

stand firm.

29:19

How in the world?

29:22

Do you possibly think that

29:26

you are going to be able to resist all

29:29

of the subtlety and the cleverness and the schemes

29:33

of the devil on your own?

29:36

You're a fool, if you think that.

29:39

You can't?

29:41

I can't.

29:42

None of us can.

29:44

I'm telling you, we have to have this armor.

29:46

And let me tell you to start with, you

29:50

don't concentrate on what he's doing.

29:52

That's not what your focus is supposed to be on.

29:55

You need to concentrate on what you're doing.

29:58

It really doesn't matter that

30:01

much that you can categorize all those

30:04

attacks that I just laid out for you.

30:06

I mean, it's good to know them.

30:08

It's good to be aware of them.

30:10

That's why I gave them to you.

30:12

But it doesn't really matter that you get down all into the

30:15

weeds of the definition of each one, because in the big picture,

30:18

you can't begin to grasp the subtlety

30:21

of what he's doing in each one of those types of attacks, and

30:25

many other tactics that he's constantly employing against us.

30:29

The actions of this, this unseeing realm.

30:32

It's far too sophisticated, far too

30:36

supernatural for us to be able to deal with it on our own.

30:39

What does matter is that we get our overall.

30:42

That we keep our armor on.

30:46

So that whenever the battle starts,

30:49

it doesn't matter what the tack is.

30:52

I don't care what the attack is that he brings.

30:56

If you've got the armor on, you're able to defend yourself.

30:59

If we have our armor on, it doesn't matter

31:02

where the enemy's attacks come from.

31:04

It doesn't matter how subtle his attack is.

31:07

When he gets there, you're already ready for him.

31:10

With your armor on.

31:12

The believer, with his armor

31:15

on, will be able to state and defend

31:18

himself, no matter what the attack is.

31:21

The issue is not, whether or not he's coming.

31:26

Because he always is.

31:28

Constantly, the issue

31:31

is not what kind of attack is he bringing?

31:34

The issue is, are you ready?

31:38

Are you ready for him when he comes?

31:42

Because if you have your armor on,

31:45

you can handle it.

31:47

trusting in God's power and strength and not yours.

31:51

Now, the rest of our time today I want to just look at the

31:54

first piece of armor, look at verse 14.

31:56

It starts out with stand

32:00

firm.

32:02

And then look at how verse 13 ends.

32:05

And having done everything to stand firm.

32:09

And the idea there, of course, is to stand firm

32:12

against the attacks of Satan, to be standing firm

32:16

already when the onsoughts come.

32:20

But if you're going to stand firm,

32:24

you have to have what it says next, starting in

32:27

verse 14, having guarded your loins with truth.

32:31

Now, the Greek word here for

32:34

truth can be translated truth as

32:38

content, like truth as

32:41

opposed to falsehood, truth as defined

32:44

in the word of God, and it also, though,

32:47

can be translated as attitude,

32:50

an attitude of truthfulness,

32:54

of sincerity, or honesty, or integrity.

32:56

So let's deal first with the understanding of truth as content.

33:00

Most translations include,

33:03

in some way, there in verse 14.

33:05

Girded with the belt of truth.

33:10

Now, that's implied here in the new American standard with

33:13

having girded your loins with truth.

33:17

And I'm going to explain that in just a moment.

33:18

And we need this belt of truth,

33:22

because Satan is going to come at us with his schemes,

33:25

which is the same word translated at the end of

33:28

Ephesians 4:14 as deceitful,

33:32

scheming.

33:34

And in the context of that verse, it's

33:37

referring to every wind of doctrine, so the enemy comes blowing

33:40

the winds of the doctrines of demons, and they

33:43

use the trickery of men in cunning craftiness, in deceitful

33:48

scheming, Paul says, and the only way that

33:51

we can resist all of this is to have the truth

33:54

having girded our loins with

33:58

the belt of truth.

34:00

That's why it's so important to

34:04

preach, and teach, and preach, and teach, and preach, teach,

34:07

the word of God on a regular, consistent basis.

34:11

That's why I'm doing this right here today.

34:13

That's why I'll be doing this as long as the Lord gives me breath.

34:16

Now, John MacArthur gives us some imagery

34:20

to this belt of truth with the following.

34:22

Back in Paul's day, everybody,

34:26

including Roman soldiers, wore a tunic.

34:30

Now, a tunic was just a big square piece

34:33

of material, and had a hole for your hit, and

34:37

two holes for your arms, and it draped

34:40

down, and that was it.

34:42

But a soldier wouldn't

34:45

go into battle with all that material flying around,

34:48

and he's swinging his sword, and he's got his shield.

34:51

I mean, you wouldn't even take a journey in that situation with

34:54

the robe hanging all down.

34:56

I mean, in Exodus, when God told the

34:59

people, Get ready to leave.

35:00

Egypt, he said, Gird up your loins.

35:03

So girding up your loins, as an

35:06

expression has found, both in the old and New Testament, that meant to

35:09

gather up all that loose flowing material, so

35:13

you could be ready to go, whether it was on a journey or even to war.

35:17

And the phrase really means readiness.

35:20

Preparedness.

35:22

And the belt was

35:26

the key ingredient to the...

35:29

Again, the soldier couldn't fight with all that material flying around.

35:32

These guys weren't shooting people from 100 yards away.

35:36

They were engaged in hand to hand combat,

35:39

so what would they do?

35:41

They would tighten up all that material.

35:43

They would literally pull the

35:46

cloak, the cloak, the tunic

35:49

up above their knees, and wrap it

35:53

all up tight, and put the belt around there, and

35:56

that would keep everything tight, and that would improve their

35:59

ability and their agility, and make them better be able to fight.

36:03

That's an example of what Paul is talking about.

36:07

That's what girding up your loins meant.

36:10

Now, attached to that belt.

36:14

They would have a stripe, a strap,

36:17

that would go across your shoulder,

36:20

would attach here in the front, go over the shoulder,

36:23

and it would also attach in the back to the belt.

36:27

And the Roman soldier would

36:30

attach his sword on there, with

36:33

a sheath on the strap.

36:35

And later on, we're going to see the sword of

36:38

the spirit, which is the word of God, is

36:41

attached to the belt of truth.

36:45

And we'll get more into that when we get to the sword

36:48

of the spirit here at the end of the armor.

36:50

So, the belt of truth,

36:54

especially connected with the sword of

36:57

the spirit, is referring to truth in terms of content,

37:01

but also, as I said earlier, the Greek word can

37:05

be defined as attitude.

37:07

An attitude.

37:11

And this is what, from that understanding, Paul is saying.

37:14

He's saying in this armor.

37:17

First put your belt on.

37:19

Put on the belt

37:22

of truth.

37:24

That shows an attitude of readiness, an

37:27

attitude of commitment, it

37:31

shows an attitude of, hey, I'm ready for battle

37:34

with the enemy.

37:35

This is an attitude that says,

37:38

Hey, you are serious about this.

37:40

When a soldier put that belt on.

37:43

And he put that strap over his shoulder, and

37:46

he put that sword in his sheep, he was saying, hey,

37:49

Hey, I'm ready to fight right now.

37:52

One of the reasons that

37:55

our nation is in the state that it's in today is

37:59

because too many Christians for too many

38:02

years have had no interest in putting the

38:06

belt on, much less the strap, much less

38:09

swinging their sword in the Christian life.

38:11

That's why we're in the state we're in today.

38:14

And Paul is saying, Hey, you've

38:19

got to realize, whether you like it or not, you're in a war.

38:22

And you've got to get serious about it.

38:25

Look at the state of our nation.

38:28

Think about what

38:31

we see happening in our day.

38:33

People who actually think

38:36

that men can be women.

38:38

Mutilating children's

38:41

bodies deceiving them into thinking they

38:44

can be something other than what God created them.

38:47

How did we get here?

38:48

Part of the reason is because Christians have left

38:51

the strap and the belt and the sword in the tent.

38:55

And have it put it on.

38:57

And having got engaged in the fight,

39:00

embraced the soldier mentality, is what Paul is saying here.

39:04

I love 2 Timothy.

39:06

2:3.

39:07

Suffer.

39:08

Hardship with me

39:11

as a good soldier of

39:15

Christ Jesus.

39:16

I've told you before, I love being a soldier.

39:18

I love being in the fight.

39:21

And with every year that goes by, I'm

39:24

realizing my days as a soldier are moving by fast.

39:29

And I want to finish strong.

39:32

I want to go down swinging.

39:36

That's what I want.

39:37

the kind of soldier I want to be, and you should want to be that type of soldier.

39:41

Look at what Paul said in 1 Corinthians 9.24.

39:44

Do you not know that those who run a race,

39:48

all run, but only one receives the prize, run

39:51

in such a way that you may win?

39:54

I want to win.

39:56

And yeah, we're going to win in the

39:59

end, but I want to win in the now.

40:01

I want to win in the battles right now.

40:03

I wanna be in the fight.

40:05

I mean, if we're going to be in

40:08

this fight, if we're going to be in this Christian life,

40:11

why not go hard at it is what I'm saying to you.

40:15

This country needs Christians

40:19

who are willing to go hard, to go

40:22

to the libraries, where they have pornography for children,

40:25

to go to the school board meeting, and stand up in

40:29

Jesus' name for what is right, to stack up

40:32

crowds, that we get to lay at the feet of King

40:35

Jesus when we die.

40:36

God has given

40:39

us, church, the most magnificent, greatest

40:43

gift in all of the human

40:46

experience, salvation, by grace

40:49

alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

40:51

And what kind of life is it that pleases our king?

40:55

Look at Romans 12,1.

40:57

Therefore, I urge you, brethren,

41:00

by the mercies of God, to present your bodies,

41:03

a living and holy sacrifice acceptable to God,

41:06

which is your spiritual service of worship, and

41:10

do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed

41:13

by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what

41:17

the will of God is, that which is good and

41:20

acceptable and perfect.

41:21

God doesn't want us on the bench.

41:25

He wants us in the game.

41:27

God doesn't want you in the tent, Christian.

41:31

He wants you on the battlefield, living a

41:34

life of voluntary sacrifice and suffering

41:37

when the battle gets hot.

41:40

So go back to that first part of Ephesians.

41:43

6:14.

41:45

Stand firm therefore.

41:48

Having girded your loins

41:51

with truth again.

41:54

This is content, as well as

41:57

attitude.

41:59

Stand firm.

42:00

Gird your loins.

42:02

This is war.

42:03

We're in war in this country,

42:06

a spiritual warfare.

42:08

This is Paul giving us a call

42:11

to a serious Christian commitment with our life.

42:16

So the call to

42:20

put on the armor for a believer.

42:21

It starts with

42:24

commitment, commitment at the very start.

42:28

You, again, again, you

42:31

are not going to beat the adversary

42:35

on your own.

42:36

He will beat you down, if

42:39

you're on your own, in many more ways than I just gave you today.

42:43

You have to have this armor on.

42:46

So I'm telling you, don't

42:49

be content with mediocrity in the Christian life.

42:52

Don't be content with lethargy

42:55

and apathy in the Christian life.

42:58

Life is going by us at light

43:01

speed, and please,

43:04

I implore you.

43:06

Don't let your

43:10

first audience, with the

43:13

king of kings, finds you

43:16

standing next to a big old pile of

43:20

wood, hay, and stubble at the judgment seat

43:23

of Christ, having done nothing to live

43:26

for his glory during the time he gave you to be a Christian.

43:29

Because all that you did as a Christian will be evaluated at

43:32

the judgment seat of Christ, and those wood, hay,

43:35

and stubble, that's useless things.

43:37

That's not just sinful things.

43:39

That's useless things that you did in your Christian life.

43:43

Don't let that be your 1st audience with your king.

43:45

Start today.

43:48

Commit yourself to laying

43:51

up palates of gold, and precious stones that

43:55

you can present at that first audience with your king

43:58

when you die.

43:59

Where do you start?

44:00

You start by putting on the belt of truth.

44:03

In our scripture for today.

44:06

And next time, we

44:09

won't even get out of this verse.

44:10

Verse 14, next.

44:13

The breastplate of righteousness.

44:16

Let's pray.

44:17

Father, we thank you, Lord, for this day.

44:19

What an incredible reality you have given

44:22

us in salvation.

44:25

What a privilege to be ambassadors and

44:28

soldiers in this great warfare that's raging

44:31

about us in the unseen realm, Lord.

44:34

Thank you, Lord.

44:35

That you have given us the armor to

44:38

put on to be able to wage this war and

44:41

not be continually beat down by our adversary.

44:46

Lord.

44:46

Take this word today and plant it in our hearts and minds

44:49

and help us all, starting with me, to make

44:52

a fresh commitment to be a soldier who

44:55

endures hardness as a good soldier in

44:59

Jesus Christ, all for your glory.

45:01

In Jesus' name we pray.

45:03

Amen.
